Tellico Village, nestled along the serene shores of Tellico Lake, provides its residents with ample opportunities to engage in various water-based activities. Among these residents there is a vibrant group known as the Tellico Village River Chicks, an organized group of ladies who love riding jet skis. They gather twice a month during summer – and even during part of the fall season – to cruise around Tellico Lake and Fort Loudon Lake. It's a fun group to be part of if you're into water adventures!
The group started as a fun excuse for lunch get-togethers, but over time, it turned into a bigger adventure, attracting new members, or "chicks," eager to join in.
For these gals, being part of the River Chicks experience is more than just about riding waves and enjoying beautiful scenery. It’s about building strong friendships, sharing laughs, and feeling the love and support of a great community by their side through it all.
Founded in 2012, the group’s early momentum can be credited to Jeanette Steele, known as “Mama Chick.” Jeanette, an avid jet skier from Florida, played a key role in forming the group and helping fellow villagers learn the ropes. Sadly, in 2022, Jeanette lost her battle with cancer.
Starting off with just a handful of gals, the River Chicks crew has grown to around 100 members, with smaller squads hitting the water together to make sure everyone stays safe and sound.
One “River chick”, Joy Thomas, has been part of this group for like 6 or 7 years. Check out what she has to say:
“I love it. So much fun to enjoy and explore our beautiful lakes, wildlife and eateries on the water. And doing it all with such wonderful new and old friends! There are too many fun moments to share. It’s always a hoot to watch us all park our skis at marinas and restaurants. When we first started, we usually had 1 or 2 that slipped into the water.
We owe this organization and its growth to our founder and Mama Chick, Jeanette Steele. We plan to continue honoring her each year. we won’t ever forget her and her absolute love of her “chicks”. She would be so proud to see a handful of jet skiing gals now close to 100 in membership.”
The highlight for everyone is the annual Poker Run. During this lively event, jet skis race across the lake to various checkpoints, drawing cards at each stop with hopes of assembling the best hand. The day concludes with a gathering at the Yacht Club for a well-earned lunch.
As the weather cools down and jet skis are put away, the River Chicks remain connected through other activities within Tellico Village. Their vibe and energy have garnered attention from other Villagers, helping the club keep on growing strong.
The River Chicks from Tellico Village truly embody the essence of adventure, friendship, and community. They sure know how to make a splash, both on and off the water.
